THE HAMBLIN PLANT NURSERY
Developments so far...
The nursery was started in December 2018 by volunteers. And what a story it has been - firstly land out of the 3-acre garden was put aside for the nursery. Then, £750 was raised by the volunteers and members to get the nursery underway.
The whole project has been a story of amazing generosity. The Head Gardener Sue and her husband Pat donated the first greenhouse. Vital pots and plants were supplied by visitors to the Centre. Facebook marketplace played a strong part too for example – 2 free greenhouses, timber, paving slabs and free plants. Then there were the wonderful donations from Trojan Timber Products of the small shed and the beautiful summerhouse which is used as the nursery office. Knight Fencing generously supplied wood and the fencing for the first part of the Nursery. The Woodhorne Group very kindly donated 15 tons of soil. Covers gave the nursery a large supply of wood, gravel etc.
A great excitement too were the donations by The National Dahlia Collection, GeeTee Bulbs and Apuldram Roses. These plants are used to enhance the small garden surrounding the nursery.
After a successful first year, the next challenge was our first opening for The National Garden Scheme in March of this year (just 2 weeks before the lockdown) when we raised £1,000 each for The National Garden Scheme and The Hamblin Centre. It was a lovely day, the gardens looked beautiful with over 180 highly appreciative visitors. 2 further dates were planned for 2020 but sadly Covid 19 intervened - we are delighted to be opening on Sunday 13th September 2020 at 11.00am.
